From January to October, the cost of the basket decreased in 16 of the 17 capitals analyzed, with percentages ranging between -11.1% in Brasilia and -0.3% in Natal. The only increase was in Aracaju (0.17%)
In October the price of basic food baskets decreased in 12 capitals of the country compared to September. The largest drops occurred in Natal (-2.82%), Recife (-2.30%) and Brasilia (-2.18%). The largest increases were recorded in Fortaleza (1.32%), Campo Grande (1.08%) and Goiânia (0.81%). The data was released this Tuesday (7) by Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Diese), which searches the price of a food basket in 17 capitals on a monthly basis.
Porto Alegre was the capital that presented the most expensive basic food set, R$ 739.21, followed by Florianópolis (R$ 738.77), Sao Paulo (R$ 738.13) and Rio de Janeiro ( R$ 721.17). The lowest values were recorded in Aracaju (R$521.96), João Pessoa (R$551.88) and Recife (R$557.10).
Comparing the price of the basic food basket in October 2023 with that of the same month in 2022, a decline was recorded in 12 capitals, with particular attention to Brasilia (-7.34%), Campo Grande (-6.9% ) and Goiânia (-5.8%). Five capitals recorded an increase in prices, with particular attention to the percentages of Salvador (0.09%), Aracaju (1.25%) and Natal (1.52%).
In the first ten months of the year (from January to October), the cost of the basic food basket decreased in 16 of the 17 capitals analysed, with percentages ranging between -11.1% in Brasilia and -0.3% in Natal. The only increase occurred in Aracaju (0.17%).
Based on the most expensive basket, which in October was that of Porto Alegre, and taking into account the constitutional determination according to which the minimum wage should be sufficient to cover the expenses of the worker’s family in terms of food, housing, healthcare, education, clothing, hygiene, transport, free time and pensions, Dieese estimates that the amount needed, in the ninth month of the year, should have been R$6,210.11 or 4.6 times the current minimum, which is R$1,320 .
