Mattarella has signed memoranda of understanding with Seoul
The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, visited this Wednesday (8) the parallel 38 N, which divides North and South Korea, and reflected on how the risk of violence always exists when a war does not end with a peace agreement.
“A crucial page of history took place here,” Mattarella said in Panmujeon, where in 1953 the Korean armistice agreement was signed that ended the Korean War, which cost more than 2 million victims in three years, and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). , the acronym for him in English).
According to the Italian leader, no peace treaty has been signed.
“Here we understand how a war that never ended with the achievement of peace carries the constant risk of new violence”, he added to the press.
Mattarella underlined that “what happens here breathes history” and “this is particularly important to avoid new explosions of violence”.
Subsequently, the President of the Italian Republic attended a state dinner with the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-Yeol, and mentioned the K-pop music group, known for its diversity of musical genres.
“Korea offers exceptional examples of innovative capacity: I am not only referring to the cutting-edge technologies that have supported its economic growth in recent decades, but also to the artistic expressions ranging from K-pop – so widespread among young people all over the world – to the affirmation of original and enormously successful cinematography,” he said.
According to him, “it is precisely the peculiar ability to unite past and future in a fruitful harmony that allows us to look with confidence at the development of our relationships”.
Furthermore, he underlined that “there are many areas in which there are similar sensitivities between Korea and Italy”, including “the common approach to the governance of the United Nations, the reform of which constitutes a “fully shared horizon” between Seoul and Rome, and the importance that both parties attach to respecting the international law of the sea and, therefore, freedom of navigation, including in the Indo-Pacific space.
