“Tomorrow you will be decisive,” the former president told the government’s base party senator in a telephone conversation, photographed by Estadão
BRASILIA — The former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) attempted to sabotage a vote in the Senate, but failed. He tried to convince a senator who was once his ally not to approve tax reform, an issue of interest to the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“Trad, tomorrow you will be decisive in defeating the tax reform,” said the contact “JMB”, the same initials as Jair Messias Bolsonaro’s full name. The JMB spoke with Senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS), whose party is part of the government’s base. The reform proposal was approved in the Senate in the first session this Thursday 8th.
Trad, who voted in favor of the proposed amendment to the Constitution (PEC), responded to the message by calling the contact “president”, and asked for understanding from Bolsonaro on the position taken. The vote was balanced and could have had a different result with four votes: the House gave 53 of the 49 votes needed.
The text messages were captured by Estadao in the Senate plenary, during the vote on the reform. “I stayed true to my word,” she said. “I hope you understand. I have suffered with you even though I am far away. These people are not our people. I am sad and my actions are boring. I can’t wait for us to return. A hug and thank you for your attention and consideration .”
According to the senator’s words in the message, he conditioned his vote in favor on whether the proposal served the interests of his state. He also said he was “sad” and “suffering” with Bolsonaro, and said he was anxious for the return of Bolsonarism. “Can’t wait for us to come back,” he wrote. Contacted by the report, Trad denied that Bolsonaro had sought him out.
When asked about receiving a message from a contact bearing the acronym of the former president’s full name, Trad said it was Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) who contacted him. Asked again about the possibility of calling Flávio, a senator, president, Trad denied having spoken to Bolsonaro. “I reserve the right to answer as I want,” he said.

Trad’s PSD has three ministries and has names closer to the government in the Senate such as Eliziane Gama (MA), rapporteur of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8, Otto Alencar (BA) and Omar Aziz (AM) .
Trad himself accompanied the government in the votes deemed “crucial” by the government this year. He voted in favor of both the tax reform and the tax framework, both of which were opposed by the PL.
As revealed by Estadao, this was not Bolsonaro’s only movement against the tax reform vote. The former president organized a dinner with PL senators at the party headquarters in Brasilia on Tuesday evening to close the issue in view of a vote against the proposal.
