In 2022, Scott Derrickson presented The Black Phone, considered by scientists to be the scariest movie ever made. Horror thriller, adapted from the novel by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), in which a shy but intelligent 13-year-old boy is kidnapped by a sadistic killer (played by Ethan Hawke), who locks him in a soundproof basement.
When the phone hanging on the wall, albeit out of order, begins to ring, the boy finds himself in contact with the voices of his captor’s previous victims, who are determined to help him.
A huge success at the box office, the film grossed 160 million internationally for an 18 million budget and attracted 452,381 viewers in French cinemas. Quickly, Universal and Blumhouse announced a sequel. The studio has recently confirmed the Black Phone 2 release date. The feature film will be released in French cinemas on June 25, 2025.
We still don’t know if Scott Derrickson will return to directing, but if screenwriter C. Robert Cargill’s recent tweet is to be believed, the latter will be involved in the project as well as writing the story.
Me: I’m only going to continue the black phone if we have a really great idea.
*phone ringing*
Joe Hill: So I have a really great idea.
Scott and I 30 seconds later: So we’re doing a sequel to Black Phone.

Me: I’ll only do a sequel to Black Phone if we have a really good idea.

Joe Hill: So I have a really cool idea.
Scott and I after 30 seconds: So we’re going to continue the black phone.
The story doesn’t say what Joe Hill’s “really great” idea is. Previous victim story? If this second opus is successful, this sequel could be the start of a whole new horror saga for Blumhouse.
