The national show brings together the ruralists and Sonia Guajajara in an impasse over the veto on the times

The party included a pig roast and an agribusiness bench celebrating the agreement to overturn Lula’s veto, prompting a “standoff” with the Minister of Indigenous Peoples

BRASÍLIA – A party with a country show and roast pig was the scene of a “climb” and an unexpected meeting on Wednesday 8th in Brasilia. A group of ruralists and the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, were in the same place the night an impasse occurred over President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s vetoes over the timing.

The party, called “Leitão no Rolete”, was organized by the government of Mato Grosso do Sul, the municipality of São Gabriel do Oeste (MS) and the Mato Grosso do Sul bench of the National Congress, coordinated by the deputy Vander Loubet (PT -MS). The parliamentarian is from Lula’s party and at the same time a member of the Agricultural Parliamentary Front (FPA).

Senators Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS) and Tereza Cristina (PP-MS), two agribusiness representatives in Congress, Minister Sonia Guajajara, the Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, and even the Venezuelan ambassador to Brazil, passed by. Manuel Vadell. Everyone listening to the show of the country duo Brenno Reis and Marco Viola.

The meeting took place shortly after the tax reform was approved in the Senate. The Lula government reached an agreement to approve the proposal and, in exchange, agreed to uphold Lula’s veto on the timing, causing dissatisfaction among the base of support for the indigenous cause. The agribusiness bench is working to overturn the veto and confirm approval of the project, which limits the demarcation of indigenous lands.

Minister Sonia Guajajara absolutely defends Lula’s veto and is against any attempt to approve the terms, an argument that has already been rejected by the Federal Supreme Court (STF). She sat at a table in the back of the room, at the Associação Atlética Banco do Brasil (AABB), while she listened to the country show and the ruralist movement nearby.

With the roast pig on the plate and the whiskey in the glass, the parliamentarians said to each other that the government will let its veto be defeated and that this is part of an agreement with the Speaker of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the Senate , Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). The government will not say it is against the veto, but it will not try as hard to overturn it as it did by approving the project.

At the beginning of the dinner, when the suckling pig was served, the ruralists celebrated the announcement that the veto would be adopted this Thursday the 9th, breaking the queue of 33 previous vetoes that have not yet been analyzed. Immediately afterwards, however, the information received at the barbecue was different: the veto will be analyzed in two weeks, after the Proclamation of the Republic holiday, on 15 November. However, a short deadline, as there are vetoes from 2021 that have not been voted on.

Ministers Sonia and Cida spoke for a long time, while PT ruralists circulated among the parliamentarians offering whiskey and inviting guests to the dance floor. At the same time, the Plenary Assembly of the Chamber voted on projects on postal services, on the payment of debts with the Revenue Agency and on the creation of space for cyclists in companies. Occasionally, MPs were interrupted by councilors with cell phones in hand to vote in the midst of the celebration. The Chamber authorizes remote voting.
