Before starting production on Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi agreed on how boring the character was.
Chris Hemsworth faced some troubles with Thor at the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the character’s first two solo films. The actor was bored and wanted to give up the character, but the direction of Taika Waititi in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) made him rethink the trajectory and future of the God of thunder in the franchise.
In an interview with vanity fairthe star of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) looked back on his career, opened up about past frustrations with Thor as a character and how waititi finally worked with him to alleviate those concerns. In addition, she talked about disappointment with his performance in Thor the Dark World (2013).
“I wasn’t excited about what I did in Thor 2, I was a little disappointed. I didn’t grow the character in any way, I didn’t show the audience something unexpected and different. So, when Ragnarok came along, I really wanted to break the mold and said this to taika,” said the actor. “The conversation we had was that I said, ‘I’m really bored with Thor,’ and he replied, “Yeah, I’m really bored with Thor too.'”
“So we dismantled the character. We wanted to [Thor] was a little more unpredictable, that he was in a different set of circumstances than he was before – and seeing the humor come through,” he continued. Chris Hemsworth. “You know, I had a great relationship with taika and we had a great sense of humor and banter with us and I thought, let’s make sure we put this in this space.”
