Weather tsunami on the southern coast of Santa Catarina

Understand the phenomenon that occurred on the coast of Santa Catarina on the afternoon of November 11, 2023.

On the afternoon of Saturday 11 November 2023, around 4pm, the sea advanced towards the continent at Cardoso beach, in the municipality of Laguna, south coast of Santa Catarina. This phenomenon that occurred is known as meteorological tsunamiit is difficult to predict and its occurrence is not very common to observe.

It usually occurs related to some weather systems such as squall lines, which is what happened this Saturday. No rough seas or coastal flooding were expected on the SC coast, however the passage of this line of instability along the southern coast caused a meteorological tsunami phenomenon.

What is a squall line

Storm lines are formed by approximately continuous storm cells arranged in an aligned fashion. When they pass parallel to the coast they can generate sudden changes in atmospheric pressure and intense gusts of wind which contribute to the advance of sea water towards the beach.

The stormy lines cause “pulses” of atmospheric pressure that propagate disturbing the waters of the continental shelf, which in turn has a propagation speed very close to the speed of advance of the stormy line, allowing an almost perfect resonance between the atmosphere and the earth’s surface. Ocean. In this way the height of the wave is amplified and when it propagates towards the coast it can amplify even more, reaching a few meters in height in a short time (minutes), which causes a rapid increase in the tide and can cause backwash and flooding coastal. .

The extent of the flooding will depend on the slope of the beach and the presence or absence of dunes. On the almost flat beaches facing the southern quadrant, such as that which occurred in Laguna, flooding can reach tens or hundreds of meters in coastal areas.
