A British baby dies after life support is turned off

Passive euthanasia was carried out despite Italy’s granting of citizenship

Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old British baby girl suffering from an incurable disease, died in the early hours of Monday (13), in the UK, after life support was turned off against her parents’ wishes.

“Indi’s life ended at 1.45 am [horário local]. Claire and I are furious, heartbroken and ashamed,” Dean, the baby’s father, said in a message delivered to the family’s lawyers in Italy, whose government has tried to intervene to prevent the girl’s death.

“The National Health Service [NHS] and the courts not only took away her ability to live, but also took away her dignity to die in the family home to which she belonged,” he added.

Dean even accused the NHS of wanting to “get rid of Indi without anyone knowing”. “But we made sure she was remembered forever,” he said.

The newborn was admitted to Queen’s Medical Center in Nottingham and suffered from a mitochondrial disease that prevents the body’s cells from producing energy, a condition considered incurable by the British National Health Service.

Last week the Italian government quickly approved the granting of citizenship to the girl, with the aim of transferring her to the Bambino Gesù Hospital, a pediatric center run by the Catholic Church in Rome.

However, the UK court rejected all of the family’s appeals to prevent Indi’s life support being turned off, arguing that the “significant pain” she felt was not justified in the face of an “incurable condition and an expectation of very short life”.

In a message on social media, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni lamented Indi’s death. “We did everything we could. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Safe travels, little Indi,” she said. .
