Senator Tim Scott withdraws from running for president of the United States

Senator Tim Scott suspended his candidacy in the Republican Party’s presidential primary for the 2024 US elections on Sunday, after months spent spending campaign resources at a breakneck pace without making any significant progress in national opinion polls.

“I think the voters, who are the most amazing people on the planet, have made it very clear that they are telling me, ‘Not now, Tim,’” Scott told Fox News in an interview Sunday evening.

His departure could provide a small boost to other candidates seeking to dislodge leader and former President Donald Trump from the top spot, such as former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

In the moments after Scott’s withdrawal, two of his campaign’s major donors told Reuters they would turn their support to Haley, who, like Scott, is originally from South Carolina.

The only black Republican in the Senate, Scott began his campaign in May, promising to present an optimistic, forward-looking vision of the United States. He sought to present himself as a deeply conservative candidate who was more capable of healing the country’s political divisions than Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

While Scott has enjoyed a modest but measurable boost in the polls in some states in recent months, he has failed to establish his own path to victory in a relatively saturated field.

Like other candidates, Scott has never told Trump supporters why they should abandon the former president, who is still well-liked by most primary voters.

Many donors had supported Scott in part because they believed he would have a strong chance of defeating President Joe Biden if he became the Republican nominee. They also have been unhappy with DeSantis’ often confrontational attitude toward big business and opposition to U.S. involvement in the war in Ukraine.
