It was a reboot before it was fashionable, it was poorly made masks (to the point where the actors didn’t listen to the instructions) instead of performing Lord of the Rings and, above all, the film started to end with the film’s delivery date. A product that was very hard to achieve: Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes got off to a bad start!
Make no mistake: this is how you recognize a Tim Burton movie!
The director and his team did their best to get Planet of the Apes in line with the scheduled summer 2001 release date. The film grossed $362.2 million worldwide, or nearly $630 million today, adjusted for inflation. It is still the franchise’s second biggest success behind Planet of the Apes: Showdown (2014). Hence the question of continuation arises.
At the time, press reviews were spot on, giving AlloCiné an average of 3.2 stars out of 5, and the public giving it a rough 2.9 out of 5. It’s still a disappointment for Fox, which doesn’t want to start a sequel. Even if the ending of the film is open, Tim Burton clearly does not want to repeat it:
I’d rather throw myself out the window than imagine doing it. I swear !
A somewhat melodramatic statement that the director released on August 16, 2001, a week before the film’s release in France, on a microphone. guardian. Burton joined the project in the spring of 2000 and had to wait until October of that year for the budget and the film to be fully approved by the studio, which left him with bitter memories:

“Here’s what I would have done differently: I gave the green light from the start so that we don’t go around in circles for six months without doing any positive work.”
Despite this success, Tim Burton knows that he has disappointed a part of the public. And even if he never stops touring, he’ll be hard pressed to relive the success of his 2000s ventures, whether with Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Funeral Wedding or Sweeney Todd.
As for the Planet of the Apes franchise, it took over a few years later with Planet of the Apes: Origins and its two sequels. In May 2024, Fox will release a new opus, Planet of the Apes: A New Kingdom, which is evolving. “A few generations later” The latest trilogy to date.
