Midwife on CANAL+: But by the way, what do you call a man a midwife?

This is one of the strongest and most beautiful movies of 2023. Released last March, Sage-Homme is already airing this November 14 on CANAL+ and is available on myCANAL.

This feature film by Jennifer Devolder is a fascinating and moving dive into the world of obstetrics, portraying Leopold. Played by Melvin Boomer (66.5), this student failed the medical entrance exam.

Mediator or midwife?

Entering the midwifery school by default and hiding the truth from those around her, she enters the corridors of the hospital to meet these patients and expectant mothers. Entering this almost exclusively female environment, he takes the wing of an experienced and passionate midwife, Natalie (Karin Viard), who forces him to abandon all preconceived notions about the profession and shakes his convictions.

Without forgetting to be realistic, positive and rhythmic, without falling into pathos, Sage-Homme highlights this profession at its most beautiful and breaks the codes by integrating men. “However, the latter remain a very minority with only 4.5% of active midwives. Most of these men work in hospitals. None are teachers“- explains the director.

Proof of this is its rarity, and even if the training of this specialty has been open to men since 1982, most people can be mistaken and incorrectly call them “intermediate”. If we can call them midwives (the term “wise” means experience and therefore knowledge of women), the correct term is “midwives”. A word to remember if we want to be able to use it even more and thus democratize the place of men in this wonderful profession!
