Matthew Perry is obviously a hit on Friends, where he played the priceless Chandler for ten seasons. But he, who only had one actor in mind for his biopic, also had a short film career, notable among others for his performance in The Killer Next Door with Bruce Willis.
In Friends, Lovers and Big Scary Things, his 2002 memoir, the late Matthew Perry, who died last month aged 54, revealed what was his favorite big-screen film of his career. And surprise, it’s not my neighborhood killer!
The film that Matthew Perry most enjoyed making and is most proud of is Love at First Sight and After, which was released in theaters in 1997. A romantic comedy in which he stars opposite Salma Hayek.
“This is probably my best film”– says Matthew Perry about love at first sight and later. A work in which he simply believes he has done “One of the best performances” of his career.
Love at First Sight and Beyond tells the story of Alex and Isabelle, who take a short flight to Las Vegas one night. A few months later, Isabel comes out again and tells Alex that she is pregnant by him. He comes from New York and swears by his job, he comes from Mexico and puts his feelings above all else.
In his memoir, Matthew Perry shared a delicious anecdote from the filming of love at first sight and the aftermath. “There is a scene where I confess my love to Salma”remembered. “He suggested that instead of looking at each other, we should look to the future together.”
And the actor concludes with humor, true to himself: “After listening to this nonsense for about twenty minutes, I finally said, ‘Listen, Salma, I’m telling you that I love you in this scene.’ You can look wherever you want, and I will look you in the eyes.”
