Reference in the theme, the International Association of Academicians of Genocide states that Israel commits a mass extermination of the Palestinians with his offensive to dismantle Hamas. The International Association of Academics of Genocide (IAGS) – the largest professional academic organization that studies mass extermination – said that Israel that Israel is committing the genocide in his genocide in his genocide in his genocide in his genocide in his offensive in the Gaza Strip.
The evaluation of the association – which has about 500 members all over the world, including several Holocaust experts – can serve to isolate even more Israel from global public opinion and adds to an growing choir of organizations that have used the term to describe Israel’s actions in Gaza. The Israeli government repeatedly rejected the accusation.
The resolution states that “Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza satisfy the legal definition of genocide in article 2 of the United Nations Convention for the prevention and punishment of the crime of the genocide (1948)” and also accuses the country of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The resolution was supported by 86% of those who voted, but the organization did not mention concrete numbers or disclosed the details of the resolution.
“People who are experts in the study of genocide can see this situation for what it is,” Associated Associate Agency told
The genocide was codified in a 1948 convention developed the horrors of the Holocaust – the massacre of 6 million Jews from the Nazi regime during the Second World War – which called him acts “committed with the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group”.
The United Nations and many Western countries consider that only a court can decide whether the crime of genocide has actually been committed. A case against Israel has already been brought to the United Nations International Court of the Upper Court (CIJ).
Israel rejects the accusation
Israel – a country founded in part as a refuge for the Jewish people in the post -war period – has vehemently denied to commit genocide. Tel Aviv defined the accusation of an anti -antororistic “blood defamation” and declared that the terrorist attack of the Islamist group Hamas on October 7, 2023, which triggered the war in the Gaza strip, was a genocidal act itself.
In Ocision, the militants led by Hamas killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped 251. Forty hostages still remain in Gaza, of whom Israel believes that about 20 are alive. Iags believes these attacks constitute international crimes.
The Israeli offensive that followed large areas of Gaza and moved most of the 2.2 million inhabitants in the area. More than 63,000 Palestinians died, mostly civilians, according to the Ministry of Health of Gaza, controlled by Hamas.
The resolution of the organization begins with the recognition that the Israeli offensive “constitutes international crimes”. Tel Aviv, in turn, claims to make every effort to avoid hurting civilians and blaming Hamas for the dead, accusing militants of fighting in densely populated areas.
The Israelis say that Hamas is prolonging the war by not surrendering and releasing the hostages. Israeli supporters say that their powerful army could have “killed much more Palestinian if they wanted it”. Genocide scholars, however, underline that the definition of crime is not only based on the number of deaths.
Previous cases
Since its foundation in 1994, the association of academics of genocide has approved nine resolutions that recognize historical or current episodes as a genocide.
The group of scholars had already considered that the treatment of China with the Muslim minority Uiguur and the brutal repression in Myanmar to the Rohingya Muslims also adapts to the definition of genocide.
In 2006, the organization stated that the declarations of the president -ranian Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in which he asked that Israel was “swept from the map”, had “intent genocida” and required urgent measures.
In July, two important groups of Israeli human rights, B’Tselem and human-Israeli rights, said that their country was committing genocide to Gaza. Although these organizations did not reflect predominant thought in Israel, it was the first time that local organizations led by Jews made these accusations.
International groups for human rights have also made the same accusation. South Africa accuses Israel before violating the convention on the Cij genocide, an accusation that Israel refuses. The Court, however, may take years to decide on the case.
