Does bodybuilding training help you lose weight? See how many calories are burned

It is important to remember that gains depend on the consistency of your training.

Bodybuilding is among the favorite exercises for those who want to lose weight, which means that this strength training is vital for muscle growth to occur. At the same time, there is so much information that leaves someone confused before starting this work. In this sense, a question arises: how many calories are spent training with weights?

Learn how calorie burning works in weight training

“To calculate calories in general for bodybuilding, we need three pieces of information: METs (metabolic equivalent of activity), duration and the person’s body weight. Considering that an intense bodybuilding workout uses six METs, a person weighs 70 kg during 60 minutes, your hourly calorie expenditure will be: (bodybuilding MET x body weight)/60) x weight training time (minimum) = 420 kcal/h”, responded exclusively to Sport Life, the company’s technical manager by Cia Athletica, Cacá Ferreira.

Exercises that engage muscle mass such as squatting, pushing, pulling and jumping enhance the goal of weight loss. It is also useful for losing fat and helps increase muscle mass, which causes the body to consume more fat while resting. Therefore, our energy is obtained from fats.

“The greater the work done during training, the greater the caloric expenditure, but often we are unable to do much work due to fatigue which also increases. So today the recommendations are: carry out high intensity training and short long training sessions daily duration to promote large calorie expenditure,” Cacá added.

Another curiosity about the usefulness of weight training

The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends doing moderate to vigorous intensity activity three to five times a week to achieve good health. There is also a tip for those who want to burn calories quickly through weight training.

“If we think in terms of calories, exercising for 30 minutes a day at a moderately high intensity has tremendous power in helping people burn a lot of calories,” commented Ferreira.

Is it worth combining weight training with aerobics to lose more calories?

“It’s worth it, yes. Having different ways of working while consuming a lot of calories can help a person break out of monotony and stimulate him with different exercises. Sometimes we are too tired to continue working on a particular exercise. And, at the same time, by proposing to perform another movement, we can continue working and burn more calories”, concluded Cacá Ferreira.

Given away

Research continues to emerge on the impact of bodybuilding on health. The investigation by the British Journal of Sports Medicine verified 17 studies on exercise, which “collected” data from more than 1.5 million people. And it found that muscle-strengthening activities were associated with a nearly 20 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition to diabetes, lung cancer and mortality due to these causes.
