The aftermath of The Crown will be longer than expected, as Netflix has decided to split the final season of its biographical series about the life of Elizabeth II into two parts. Four episodes will be available from November 16 on the platform, while the last six will be revealed on December 14.
Season 5 was a turning point in the series as Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) took a back seat. Thus, Princess of Wales Diana Spencer (Elizabeth Debic) became the new hero of the program, and the plot returned for a long time to the erosion of her marriage to Prince Charles and the break with the British monarchical institution.
Season 5 ended in the early 90s, and the year 1992 is famous annus horribilis – Queen Elizabeth II plunged into deep sadness. Faced with the divorce of three children and the fire at Windsor Castle, the monarch also decided to say goodbye to the liner Britannia, the ship on which she took memorable voyages in the younger years of her reign.
That year, Elizabeth II felt that the monarchy was preparing for an unprecedented crisis. A divorce between his son Charles and his daughter-in-law Diana now seems imminent following revelations of the latter’s double life.
The display of infidelity echoes her husband Prince Philip’s misbehavior, which the Queen has preferred to turn a blind eye to in order to maintain the couple’s public image.
A symbol of a bygone era, Elizabeth II takes a dim view of Diana Spencer’s emancipation. The latter particularly shocked the royal family by recalling her personal life during a BBC interview, and later in a book of shocking confessions written with journalist Andrew Morton.
The fifth season does not end on Diana’s best form. Of course, her official separation from Charles is almost a victory for the latter. But her independence is not yet truly earned, although her friendship with billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed foreshadows her future love affair with her son Dodi… but also their imminent death.

The final episode of Season 5 ends with a marriage proposal. Dody proposes an engagement ring to model Kelly Fisher by the swimming pool of a glitzy Hollywood villa.
As for her, photographed alone in a luxurious suite, Diana faces the mirror. The Princess of Wales offers a circumstantial smile to her reflection, as if to reassure herself that better days lie ahead.
Prince Charles has been the big bad guy of this fifth season in a way. The revelation of his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles through the infamous “Tampon Gate” affair cost him his marriage to Diana, but also cast doubt on his ability. to become King of England in the eyes of public opinion and Elizabeth II.

A scene showing Charles’ relationship with new Prime Minister Tony Blair appears to be a total fabrication and has also been heavily criticized by the former politician.
Nevertheless, the series shows the Prince of Wales plotting against the Queen and pleading his own case to curry favor with the new occupant of 10 Downing Street.
A scene that shows a new face for Prince Charles, that of an ambitious man frustrated with his role as heir apparent and willing to do anything to speed up his ascension to the throne. There is no doubt that this scene will be of great importance to the plot of the sixth season of The Crown…
You can watch the first five seasons of The Crown now on Netflix.
