The author of “Shadow and Bones” is disappointed by the cancellation

The writer Leigh Bardugo, author of the trilogy of books that inspired “Shadow and Bone”, said she was disappointed by Netflix’s cancellation of the series, without reaching the end of the story. “The news hit me hard. I am heartbroken and extremely disappointed,” she wrote on Instagram Wednesday evening (15 /).

“Most authors never get the chance to see their work adapted to the screen. I was lucky enough to be able to see an adaptation of my story with amazing writers, crew and cast,” Bardugo added.

“We are readers first and foremost, and that means we will never stop imagining that magic can become reality. You are proof of that. Now I’m going to cry, maybe have a drink, and then we’ll see where all this goes.” History leads us to take. Without mourning”, concluded the author.

News of the cancellation came shortly after Netflix announced at Geeked Week that it was launching a game inspired by the attraction.

Series details

“Sombra e Ossos” was created by Eric Heisserer (writer of “Birdbox” and “Arrival”) and had two seasons streaming. The plot is set in a fantasy world devastated by war, where orphaned cartographer Alina Starkov discovers an extraordinary power: the gift of light. With the monstrous threat of the Folda Shadow lurking, Alina is separated from everything she knows to train to join an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. As she learns to control her powers, she realizes that allies and enemies are not so different and that nothing in this world is what it seems.

The main role was played by newcomer Jessie Mei Li, a young English actress with theater experience who made her film debut in “Last Night in Soho”, released after the series. The cast also highlighted the well-known Ben Barnes (of “Punisher”, “Westworld” and “Chronicles of Narnia”) as the main antagonist, as well as Archie Renaux (“Hanna”), Freddy Carter (“Pennyworth”), Amita Suman ( “The Outpost”), Kit Young (“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”) and Daisy Head (“Harlots”).

Wave of cancellations

In addition to “Shadow and Bone,” Netflix canceled four other series on Wednesday, but the other productions only had one season available.

As Bardugo confirmed in his outburst, the platform also gave up on adapting the “Six of Crows” duology, coming from the same universe as “Shadow and Bone”. As soon as it acquired the rights to the works, Netflix announced that it would make both series, something strengthened after the good reception by the public of the first season of the original production.

The decisions would have been the consequence of the long strike of Hollywood screenwriters and actors, a strike that lasted months and which, in the end, reduced the profit margins of companies thanks to the victories of the unions.
