Fear in cinema is subjective, and few films agree with everyone. Others, Alejandro Amenabar’s film, is part of this exception.

The story takes place at the end of World War II. Grace lives with her two children in a huge mansion while waiting for her husband to return from the war. When he goes to the door looking for work for three servants, strange things begin to happen. The building becomes the scene of a real nightmare for the family.

In others, there is no blood, few jumps, no violence, but the effect is complete. The thriller is part of the great tradition of sixties horror films such as Lewis Allen’s Secret Rock and Jack Clayton’s The Innocents.

It’s all about its atmosphere, both nasty and drunk. All the ingredients are there to make it a ghost story: a remote setting, multiple characters, slamming doors, whispers, and an endless source of nightmares.

To establish the terrorist climate, director Alejandro Amenabar plays with sound, behind the camera and with numerous ideas, such as the illness of children who are very sensitive to sunlight and are forced to live with the curtains always closed. It is enough to plunge the audience, as well as the protagonists, into darkness.

Not that others’ reputations don’t fade over the years. The film has countless memorable scenes – one involving a little girl covered in a white mist – and plenty of surprises – it would be unforgivable to reveal them here.

Not to mention the interpretation of its lead actress, Nicole Kidman, at the pinnacle of her art.

Perfect for an evening alone or accompanied – we recommend the latter option if ever – Les Autres is a genre masterpiece not to be missed.

The Others is available on Netflix.
