Threads start testing hashtags, but without using hashtags

Social network Threads begins testing tags in publications, with initial access in Australia and limited to just one keyword per post

The social network Discussions has begun testing an option to mark tags in publications as a way to organize posts by topic and make it easier to find similar content. The functionality is the same as hashtags on platforms like Instagram and the X, with the difference that the “#” symbol is not displayed and only one tag is allowed per post.

According to the CEO of Objective, Marco Zuckerbergtesting has begun in Australia and other countries should receive the news soon.

How to include tags in threads

Although it does not show the hashtag symbol in tags, the operation for including tags in Threads is the same as in other social networks.

To insert the tag, simply type the “#” sign and then the keyword you want to associate. The platform then suggests a list of tags around the entered term, indicating the volume of posts for each option.

Currently, the test only allows one tag per post. This restriction prevents the use of excessive tags in posts from other platforms, but it is possible that Meta will remove this limitation as the feature is released in more countries.

After publishing, tags appear highlighted in blue and can be clicked by other people to see other content related to the same keyword.

Meta hasn’t laid out a timeline for the feature’s launch in Brazil or other regions outside of Australia.

Try DMs

In addition to tagging, the microblogging social network is testing another feature: the ability to send direct messages via Thread with connection to the Instagram inbox.

The director of the platform, Adam Mosseri, spoke about this test in a conversation with the public. The manager informed of the possibility of sending DMs from Threads without having to switch from one application to another and said he was confident in this integration.

Despite this, Mosseri admits that there is much to improve and if the connection with the Instagram message box does not work, he has two alternatives: “mirror” messages on Threads or create a completely separate DM system for the microblogging platform . According to the executive “none of these alternatives looks good”.

Mosseri’s comment suggests that the company continues to view Threads as an extension of Instagram rather than a standalone product, despite some more recent moves.

Since launch, registration on the platform has only been possible via a connection with Instagram and just this week it was introduced option to delete the Threads account only without using the photo and video network profile.
