PCI-SIG Announces New CopprLink Connector for PCIe 5.0 and 6.0 Standards

PCI-SIG introduces CopprLink connectors, the new internal and cable standard for PCI Express 5.0 and PCI Express 6.0 interfaces; understand

PCI-SIG, the organization responsible for developing the standard for power and data connectors, among other technologies, introduced CopprLink connectors. The revelation took place during the SC23 conference, in Denver (Colorado), and new connectors for PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 6.0.

According to PCI-SIG, work is already being done on CopprLink and the launch is scheduled for 2024, but without a precise date yet. For now, only the name and release window have been confirmed, but more details will be revealed soon.

More speed and efficiency

One of the expectations in terms of connectors is the update of the 12VHPWRs that were giving problems owners of GeForce RTX 4090 cards. In fact, the extension prototypes for PCIe ports with Direct power up to 600W via motherboardeliminating the need for cables.

However, based on what PCI-SIG suggested in its announcement, CopprLink appears to be a new standard focused on transmitting data between devices. Currently, PCIe 4.0 interfaces operate at a bandwidth of 16 GT/s (Gigatransfers per second), while PCIe 5.0 can operate at up to 32 GT/s.

Therefore, it is expected that the new PCI-SIG optimize metallic conductivity, reducing energy losses. Modifications like this allow for higher speeds without increasing the thermal design too much, making new devices more energy efficient, as current ones are clearly already practically at their thermal limit.
