$1.8 billion: 5th film for the saga that revolutionized science fiction?

After floating around for several years, the rumors came true in the summer of 2019: Lana Wachowski is preparing to revive The Matrix. Without his sister Lily, but with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, whose characters Neo and Trinity died in the third (and, then, last) film of the saga, which began in 1999.

Entitled Matrix Resurrections, the feature film suffered the consequences of the pandemic that hit the world in 2020: its filming was interrupted, delaying its release, which was originally planned for May 2021. It finally happened a few months later, in December. in theaters in the United States and on HBO Max, as were all Warner films (except Dune) that year.

Which is sure to have an impact on its box office, and with $157.3 million in revenue (190 for a production budget), it marks the franchise’s lowest score. And the director again divides the audience, trying to surprise and offer something different to what they expected from the matrix.

Calling several actors and actresses from her Sense8 series, as well as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) or Neil Patrick Harris around Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, Lana Wachowski signs a more organic film and tries. Take back the saga and remember that this is first and foremost a love story, not just about guns and fights.

A particularly striking speech in this ridiculous sequence, where the filmmaker openly mocks his producers, implying that he was forced back behind the camera under the punishment of another person making a feature film instead. But not all viewers were receptive.

Averaging a 2.6 out of 5, it’s the saga’s lowest-rated opus on AlloCiné… while the press ranks it above the first Matrix, 3.5 out of 3, 4 out of 5. In the face of the phenomenal success of Spider-Man: No Way Home released the week before, Resurrections was not an expected success on any level. And that’s probably why there was never talk of a sequel, and Lana Wachowski confirmed that it wasn’t the start of a new trilogy.

Which doesn’t stop us from (again) giving Matrix Resurrections a chance, airing this Friday, November 17th on TMC. Arguably the most moving of the four feature films in the Wachowski saga.
