As the MonsterVerse expands its universe with a TV series — Monarch: Legacy of Monsters , which just launched on Apple TV+ — Godzilla fans have some clarifications to make. We first need to give them an idea of where this is taking place in the Monsterverse timeline.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters follows several agents of Monarch, a secret organization dedicated to the search for titans. It was the common thread between all the movies that are part of the MonsterVerse. Plot details have been scarce so far, but there have been some developments about what part of the Monarch’s history the series will follow.
While the MonsterVerse films have been praised for the importance they place on action and Kaijus, they have largely neglected the human characters. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes the opposite approach of the movies to put humans at the center of its story.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes place between the 1950s and 2010s
Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the series spans both the origins of the Monarch Organization in the 1950s and the modern revival of Godzilla and his battle with the MUTOs circa 2014. Part of the chronological series takes place in 2014, after Godzilla’s battle in San Francisco as seen in the first film.
The series traces the history of the Monarch family through three generations, all centered around a central character: Kurt Russell, who plays a secret army officer named Lee Shaw, and his son Wyatt Russell plays a younger version of the same character.
The show’s journey is a connecting thread between the 1950s and the 2010s. As previously mentioned in several Monsterverse movies, Monarch was originally founded to investigate and study Godzilla after he was awakened by nuclear tests in the 1950s. The military tried to kill him.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is currently available on Apple TV+.
