Sao Paulo is close to confirming the purchase of Luiz Gustavo, former midfielder of the Brazilian national team, who could be the team’s second reinforcement for 2024. Despite his age, the 36-year-old player seems to be in good physical shape.
Over the last four seasons, the athlete has played an average of 32 games. Between 2022 and 2023, with Al-Nassr, he made 32 appearances, with five goals scored. In the previous three years, defending Fenerbahçe, there were at least 28 matches per season.
Compared to the number of matches required by the Brazilian football calendar, the numbers are low. Still, it’s an attractive average for a more veteran athlete.
By way of comparison, left-back Marcelo, from Fluminense, arrived in Rio de Janeiro without having played even 20 games in the last three seasons, with Olympiacos, from Greece, and Real Madrid. In 2023 he managed to increase these numbers to 27 matches for the Rio team.
Luiz Gustavo has built much of his career abroad, mainly in Germany. He began his career at Hoffenheim before shining at Bayern Munich, where he shared the dressing room with full-back Rafinha, captain of San Paolo.
From there, the experienced midfielder moved to Wolfsburg, Olympique Marseille, France, Fenerbahçe, Turkey and Al-Nassr. Furthermore, he defended the Brazilian team at the 2014 World Cup, held in Brazil.
At the Tricolore the athlete will have to alternate with Pablo Maia, holder of the midfield role, or even play together with the young man from Cotia. It is worth mentioning that the athlete attracts interest from Europe and could be sold to San Paolo in the next window. With the arrival of Luiz Gustavo, coach Dorival Júnior keeps the level of the sector high, given that next year the team will compete in the Copa Libertadores.
The veteran should be the club’s second reinforcement for 2024. Previously, Sao Paulo had already signed striker Erick, who played in the last Serie B of the Brazilian championship with Ceará.
