So Close to the Clouds: the story of the women’s soccer team that Mexico forgot

After its success at the Morelia Film Festival, ViX premieres So Close to the Cloudsa documentary documenting how Mexico’s Women’s Soccer Team came very close to becoming world champions on two occasions.

The stands of the Azteca stadium were packed on the morning of September 5, 1971 to witness a historic event: the National team was playing in a World Cup final for the first time. She was the representative of the women, a group of young girls emerging from llanero soccer who in a very short time had managed to win the hearts and respect of the Mexican public.

Fifty years later, the protagonists of this feat are remembered So Close to the Clouds the arduous path they had to travel to place themselves on the threshold of this glory which, although they did not achieve it, continues to represent an unprecedented break with the established in a sport monopolized by men and in a society where the value of memory and gender equality seems to be an eternal pending.

This documentary is an emotional document in which we can see how “Las Chamacas”, the name they were also known by, started hitting a ball with their friends from the block and then won the hearts of thousands of Mexicans who were thrilled . to see them play and fill the football fields with value.

Tan Cerca de las Nubes is directed by director Manuel Cañibe, who took six years to gather all the information to tell how the first Mexican women’s soccer team was created, which reached the top at the international level and then deserted.

This documentary was the winner of the Ojo Award from the Michoacana section of the Morelia International Film Festival.
