Season 3 of The Haunting after Hill House and Bly Manor? That’s what creator Mike Flanagan thought, the former king of horror at Netflix, who has since left for another streaming platform that welcomed him with open arms.

In the preface to the reprint of the novel House of Hell by Richard Matheson (Matt bloody disgusting), with the title known to us House of the DamnedThe author of the latest version of The Fall of the House of Usher has revealed that he envisions adapting the story for Netflix’s “Haunting” Season 3:

“When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix, we talked about doing a Haunting anthology.”Flanagan writes. “We followed Hill House to Bly Manor, based on the Henry James ghost stories.”

If there was a season 3, I would do The Haunting of Hell House. It was even the first choice to give Hill House a season 2, but the rights weren’t available and the situation seemed deadlocked.

Hell House is the story of a haunted house. For more than 20 years, the mysteries of the Belasco House have remained untouched, as attempts to explain them have ended in death, suicide or insanity.

At the beck and call of a wealthy publisher, four new investigators risk their lives to once again try to uncover its secrets. It’s about a physicist interested in parapsychology, his wife and two mediums (one mentalist, one physical) who will figure out where the residence nicknamed “The House of the Damned” comes from.

Mike Flanagan is full of praise for this story, which we have a feeling he’d love to adapt one day:

“I don’t know if there’s a more fundamentally cinematic story than House of Hell. It is written by a man who thinks visually, with an eye for cinematic drama, audience expectations, and visceral thrills that have eluded many of his literary predecessors. .”

The novel was also brought to film in the delicious La Maison des damnés, released in France in 1974 and adapted by Richard Matheson himself. and according to Flanagan, House of Hell Influenced many classic horror films:

Without Hell House, I think there would be no Poltergeist, no Conjuring, no Insidious.

With the director’s and screenwriter’s passion for the project, it’s easy to imagine what “Haunting” Season 3 could bring with a similar theme. We will find her favorite actors there, such as Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Tina Miller or Kate Siegel: we can already see ourselves watching Netflix episodes on Halloween night!

Unfortunately for us, the project is not at all relevant at the moment, especially since Flanagan has parted company with Netflix (which presumably owns the rights to the Haunting saga) and headed to Prime Video to adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. A project that should take him several years due to its scope.

Too bad for horror fans!
