The company considers inclusion one of its values

It also shows how the pursuit of equity and diversity is an essential pillar of UnitedHealth Group Brasil’s organizational culture

According to one in-depth study conducted by the consultancy firm McKinsey & Company on the state of corporate diversity in Latin America, companies in the region that encourage good inclusion and diversity practices tend to outperform other companies in key business practices, such as innovation and collaboration, and are more likely to achieve superior financial performance than companies that do not. This has led to an increase in positive actions in this sense by the most diverse companies in the country, in a practical and conceptual way.

Like the one carried out by UnitedHealth Group Brasil, which, to enhance inclusion as an essential pillar of its organizational culture, has added it to its corporate values, alongside integrity, compassion, relationships, innovation and performance. The objective was to demonstrate the importance of this topic, as well as diversity and equity, in the company that controls the healthcare providers Amil and Amil Dental and the Americas medical-hospital network.

“Inclusion is an essential value that guides our company and directs it towards a plural and egalitarian future. We must give it the necessary importance and see it as a central pillar of our organizational culture. Our mission is to help people live in a healthier environment and help make the healthcare system work better for everyone,” says Vice President of Personal and Corporate Security at UnitedHealth Group Brazil, Ricardo Burgos.

“This addition ensures that the company’s values better represent who we are and our conduct in actively seeking to create an environment where truly everyone, without exception, feels welcome, respected and empowered to contribute fully,” adds the executive.

Ricardo Burgos highlights that companies are never in the ideal phase of inclusion and diversity and always need to evolve, as they are dynamic: business models and teams change, for example. Which leads UnitedHealth Group Brasil to pay constant attention to this agenda. Among the results achieved by the company in 2023 in relation to inclusion and diversity actions, it is highlighted that the percentage of hires made up to October and of people belonging to a heterogeneous group (over 50 years; self-declared black or mixed-race); women; with disabilities; or LGBTQIAPN+), for positions ranging from senior manager to executive director, was 68.85% of all attendance, far exceeding the 50% goal set for this year.

Another initiative whose numbers deserve to be highlighted is the Caps Afro Project, which aims to offer better adaptation and more comfort to people working in the company’s care team, based on an idea that emerged in the dialogue group Melanin. All 31 UnitedHealth Group Brasil hospitals (19 in Amil and 12 in the Americas network) will make available, from the first half of the year, disposable caps that cover a variety of hair types, including curly, voluminous and braided hair. At the end of October, more than 35 thousand units were purchased and are available for this purpose.

In addition to Melanina, responsible for discussions on ethno-racial equity, UnitedHealth Group Brazil has five other dialogue groups: + Eficiente (people with disabilities), Pride (LGBTQIAPN+), Nós Por Elas (gender equity), Nossas Gerações (intergenerationality ) and Kaleidoscope (religiosity and regionalism). They are currently made up of almost 1,300 voluntary collaborators and internally encourage the debate on Inclusion and Diversity, trying to encourage the adoption of company measures.

This November, a series of activities will take place to promote discussion on racial issues within the organization. On the 16th, speaker Inês Borges, administrator, digital business specialist, master’s student in economics and who works as a mentor for people and companies, spoke about the potential of black people and the importance of taking the first step. This Tuesday (11/21), it was the turn of chef Jorge da Hora, professor of the Gastronomy, Hospitality and International Chef Training courses at the Senac Santo Amaro University Center, to explain the presence of African culture in the formation of Brazilian culture – cuisine, history, religion and silences. And on November 30th the winners of the fourth edition of the Dr. Juliano Moreira – Melanina Reconhecimento Award will be announced. He honors the first black doctor in Brazil and recognizes black and brown people who represent UnitedHealth Group Brasil’s six values: integrity, compassion, inclusion, relationships, innovation and performance.
