Under the terms of the deal, brokered by Qatar, 50 Israeli hostages, women and children, will be exchanged for 150 Palestinian prisoners.
The long-awaited four-day pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas came into force on Friday (11/24), but both sides say it will be temporary.
Under the terms of the deal, brokered by Qatar, 13 Israeli hostages, including women and children, are expected to be released later – the number is expected to reach 50 in four days.
For its part, Israel has pledged to release 150 Palestinian prisoners. According to Israeli authorities, among the prisoners to be released are Palestinian women, children and teenagers detained in Israel.
Small arms and mortar fire, as well as an airstrike, were heard by a BBC journalist near Gaza moments before the pause took effect, at 7am local time (2am Brasilia time).
Truckloads of medical supplies, fuel and food have arrived in Gaza from Egypt.
According to the Egyptian government, 130 thousand liters of diesel will be delivered daily.
On October 7, Hamas militants carried out a surprise attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages.
Israel then launched a military offensive – including airstrikes and ground operations – that killed more than 14,000 people, 40% of them children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run Ministry of Health.
How it will work
According to BBC Middle East correspondent Yolande Knell, the first of the 13 hostages will be handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross at around 4pm local time (11am Brazil time).
They will cross the Rafah crossing, between Gaza and Egypt. There they will meet the Israeli security forces, have their identities verified, undergo initial medical tests and then be taken to Israel by helicopter.
Once in Israeli territory, they will be taken to hospital for further medical checks and then reunited with their families.
After that, a few hours will pass – according to the terms of the agreement – before the first Palestinian prisoners are released from Israeli prisons.
According to the agreement, once the hostages are released and in Israel’s possession, the Israeli government will release 39 Palestinian prisoners and then the same process will have to be repeated over the next three days.
Thereafter there is the possibility of a further extension of the pause in fighting, provided that Hamas releases 10 more hostages a day.
In total, 200 trucks carrying aid, four fuel tankers and four trucks carrying cooking gas will be allowed to enter Gaza through Egypt’s Rafah crossing on each of the four days.
