Desire: Disney’s new film battles The Hunger Games for the top of the US box office

Cinema is back in a big way and Thanksgiving in the United States is usually a competitive time for productions screened. This year, however, Disney did not perform well and, once again, found itself behind another Hollywood blockbuster. We are talking about The Hunger Games: Song of Birds and Serpents, already in its second week of exhibition. The debut of Napoleon and the resistance of Trolls 3 they make the scenario even more heated.

Disney vs. The Hunger Games

In the United States, Disney launched Desire: the power of desires, whose release date in Brazil is scheduled for January 2024.

However, contrary to expectations, the company did not win and raised $3.9 million on Thanksgiving, last Thursday (23rd). Second Varietythe projection is to generate 35 million dollars in the first five days of the fair.

The problem is that Disney faces competition: The Hunger Games: Song of Birds and Serpents is in its second week on show and has shown no signs of slowing down. The film cost $100 million and has already grossed $69.6 million in the United States. On Thanksgiving alone it was $5.9 million.

For comparison, the Disney film cost $200 million to make. In other words, the company must insist on animation to make a profit.

More competition

Box office numbers this year, more specifically during the US holidays, show an improvement in ticket sales since returning to theaters following the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the current numbers are not even comparable to those from before, when Ralph breaks the Internet AND Creed II raised $315.6 million in a single day in 2018.
