Willem Dafoe Reveals His Role in ‘Beetlejuice 2’

Willem Dafoe was present at the 20th edition of the Marrakech Film Festival this weekend. In an interview with Varietythe actor said he was “happy to produce and start working again” (now that the Hollywood strike is over) and talked about his role in Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice”.

Scheduled for release in September 2024, the film is the sequel to the 1988 comedy with horror and fantasy touches starring Michael Keaton, which was a critical success (find out where to watch it here). Keaton will return in the lead role, as will Winona Ryder, who played the girl Lydia. In the new production she has a daughter, who will be played by Jenna Ortega (Wandinha).

Dafoe will play the role of a police officer in the afterlife. “I am a dead person. And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I got in an accident and that’s what sent me to the other side. But thanks to my skills, I became a detective of the afterlife. So, this is my job. But it’s influenced by who I was when I was alive: a B-movie action star.”

“Beverly Ghost” tells the story of a recently deceased couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) who haunt their old home and are extremely troubled by the arrival of a new family (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones play the parents and Ryder plays his teenage daughter).

Then they come into contact with Beetlejuice, a troublesome ghost who is a former social worker of the dead, who promises to help them haunt the new inhabitants.

The sequel to Beetlejuice has undergone several changes over the years, with a high turnover of screenwriters since 2011. In 2022, Plan B, actor Brad Pitt’s production company, decided to embrace the project together with Warner Bros.

Burton initially declared not to be involved, but then backtracked, taking over the direction of the film, which will also see Monica Bellucci in the cast, in the role of Beetlejuice’s wife.

William James “Willem” Dafoe’s resume includes roles in the films Platoon, Speed 2: Cruise Control, Spider-Man, Aquaman and Mr. Bean’s Vacation. He also starred in the comedy Marine Life with Steve Zissou and voiced Gil the fish in the animated Finding Nemo.

He has been nominated four times at the Oscars: three in the best supporting actor category (for Platoon, in 1987, Shadow of the Vampire, in 2001 and The Florida Project, in 2018) and once in the best actor category for At Eternity’s Gate. (2019).
