Pacheco says the Senate will make a concerted effort to vote on Dino and Gonet’s nominations in December

The President of the Senate specified that in addition to the two names, the Senate will analyze other nominations made by President Lula for command posts

BRASILIA – The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), declared on Monday 27, that the Chamber will make a concentrated effort between December 12 and 15 to organize the hearings of the authorities appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Congress National. The list includes the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, for a vacancy at the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic Paulo Gonet for the command of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

The two names were communicated today Monday 27th by the Head of the Executive and are already included in the legislative system. Pacheco said he will forward the nominations to the Senate Constitution and Judiciary Committee (CCJ) and said the intention is to evaluate all the names this year.

“Evidently it doesn’t just depend on the Presidency, it is a collective exercise involving the standing committees of the House and also involving the leadership,” he said. After passing through the commission, nominees must receive the approval of a supermajority of the House plenary.

Pacheco denied that Lula asked him to pay “special attention” to Dino and Gonet after the Senate rejected the nomination of Igor Roque to head the Federal Public Defense Office (DPU) in late October, in a defeat for the current government.

“Lula communicated only the transmission of names,” he said. The two spoke on the phone this morning. In addition to Dino and Gonet, Pacheco recalled that under consideration by the Senate are the two directors nominated for the Central Bank, four councilors of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), two names for positions at the Securities and Exchange Commission ( CVM) and members of the embassies and of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and the National Council of the Public Prosecutor (CNMP).

They will all pass through the CCJ and, subsequently, through the plenary of the Chamber. “At this point it will be up to the Senate commissions, in relation to all these appointments, the times to hold the hearings and make evaluations in the commissions and transmit it to the Presidency for the designation of the agenda”, said Pacheco. He reiterated that next week the Chamber will be empty due to the presence of parliamentarians at the Climate Conference (COP 28) in Dubai.

Pacheco also stated that Dino’s appointment to the STF is not linked to the approval of the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution PEC 8/2021, which limits the monocratic decisions of the Court. “These are independent things,” the senator said.
