Google will delete unused Gmail accounts this Friday (1st)


Data from Gmail, Drive, Photos and other services will be deleted this Friday (1st) for Google accounts that have been inactive for more than two years

OR Google will automatically start deleting unused Gmail accounts this Friday (1st). The measure, originally announced in May this yearreaches services such as Guide, Photos AND Workspacein addition to the email platform itself, for profiles that have been inactive for at least two years.




Only personal accounts will be affected, in a change that is part of Google’s policies regarding inactive profiles. In addition to company and student profiles, accounts linked to channels on Youtubeas long as they have at least one video published on the platform.

  • Gmail: email address and messages received or sent;
  • Calendar: events on the agenda;
  • Workspace: Documents and files from apps like Docs, Sheets, and others;
  • Google Drive: archived files;
  • Google Photos: Archived images and videos.

According to Google, owners of profiles considered inactive were notified throughout the second half of the year via messages to their accounts and also recovery contacts. If they wanted to preserve their data, it would be enough to simply carry out the activities before the two-year deadline is reached.

 

Cleaning, according to Google, has to do with security, as old, unused profiles can be compromised by cybercriminals or be locked down with improper passwords and other security protocols. Additionally, the change complies with international legislation that forces tech companies to delete data after a certain period of inactivity.

How to keep your Google account active?

In the same way that it has listed the data that will be deleted during this cleaning of inactive profiles, Google has also provided a list of tasks that will allow the accounts to remain active, along with all the information. Watch:

  • Watch videos on YouTube with your logged in account;
  • Read and send emails;
  • Download apps from the Google Play Store;
  • Use Google sign-in in third-party applications;
  • Stay signed in to your Google account on an active Android device.

Those who don’t want to keep their account active can also download all the data into a file backup. Additionally, according to Google, emails from deleted accounts will not be released new registrationsagain, for security reasons.
