The comedy Les Galettes de Pont-Aven, released in cinemas in the mid-70s, tells the story of Henri Serin, an umbrella representative, who leads a quiet life between his work, his family and his painting. One fine day, a man who, during numerous business trips, indulges in several romantic escapades that take him away from the boring everyday life in which his wife lives, decides to leave everything behind to live on love and fresh water.

A feature film with cult status, Les Galettes de Pont-Aven would still have had a hard time releasing it as it is today. Because this rather unclassifiable piece, perfectly suited to the libertarian spirit of the 70s, honestly goes a long way.

Very funny, but devoid of melancholy, Les Galettes de Pont-Aven is a film of great freedom of tone, a frankly daring erotic-burlesque alien, whose main asset is Jean-Pierre Mariel. The late actor, full of bravado but who also knows how to move, finds here one of the best roles of his illustrious career.

The role of Henri Serin was also written by director Joël Céria with Jean-Pierre Mariel in mind, whom he had directed two years earlier in Charlie and His Two Girls. “Jean-Pierre loved the script and his lush dialogues. But the subject scared the producers. That’s a credit. Jean-Pierre Belmondo that we were able to find financing”recalled the film director in 2015 At the microphone of our colleagues at Le Parisien.

Les Galettes de Pont-Aven was a huge success at the French box office, with over a million viewers.

Tonight on C8 at 9.10pm.
