With the end of the Hollywood actors’ strike earlier this month, many films have returned with determination to try and stick to their original release schedule. One of these productions is Gladiator 2which according to Variety will resume filming next week.
Gladiator 2 is set 25 years after the events of the first film, which had Maximus (Russell Crowe) as a Roman general, one of Rome’s strongest and most skilled gladiators. The sequel to the film, however, will focus on adult Lucius (Lucilla’s son). In the original, the character was played by Spencer Treat Clark, his previous version will be played by Paul Mescal.
It’s worth mentioning that Maximus died in the first film after the battle with Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) ended, making it impossible to continue his story in a sequel.
Gladiator is considered a blockbuster. The production grossed more than $460 million at the worldwide box office and was nominated for 12 Oscars, of which it won five, including Best Picture. The film also earned Crowe the Oscar for best actor.
