How to take a photo of the Moon with your cell phone?

You don’t need a smartphone with a powerful zoom to take a photo of the moon, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the photo might not be as good without the right equipment.

“Well up there in the sky there is a Moon who lives alone in her sad world”, as the song by Sandy & Júnior says. Earth’s natural satellite that inspires so much music can also inspire your photos for social media. But do you know how to take a photo of the Moon with your cell phone?

Comes with the Canaltech I’ll give you some tips for getting a decent photo of the Moon shining in the sky. And then the “Moon will illuminate his thoughts” – that is, his social networks. And all this without needing a smartphone with a powerful zoom of 30 times or more.

Can you take a photo of the Moon with your cell phone?

Let’s say you “see that Moon shining in the sky” and you want to take a photo of it. With your cell phone, pointing and shooting will only result in a white dot in the middle of the dark sky. So, how can it be made clear that this is the natural satellite of the Earth?

Step 1: Put your phone into video mode

Just go to video mode. It seems crazy, but it helps, especially nowadays, with cell phones taking photos from recording frames. Choose the highest possible shooting resolution, ideally 4K or higher.

Warning: If your phone is limited to Full HD video, it will be difficult to take a good photo.

Step 2: Zoom in and check the photo’s exposure or brightness

Point the camera at the Moon and zoom in until you get a good shot. So you’ll probably have to tap the screen and reduce the exposure to turn the white dot into something recognizable.

By reducing the shutter speed, the amount of light captured also decreases and this helps record details from such a bright spot.

The hardest part is keeping your phone stable while you do all this. Especially because, with zoom, any blur can make the Moon pop out of the frame. Additionally, a blur can make the photo slightly blurry. Therefore, the ideal is to take multiple shots and choose the best one.

Step 3: Capture a video

On iPhone, just tap the white button at the top of the screen to capture directly from video (Image: Felipe Junqueira/Canaltech)

With the right framing and exposure you think is ideal, simply tap the camera button to capture a video. The cell phone will record a frame as if it were a photo.

What is the best app for taking a photo of the Moon?

In fact, you can use your phone’s native camera app. Most have a button for taking photos while the device is recording. This generates a frame capture of the video, which is nothing more than a photo. Major brands have this feature, at least on premium phones.

But it is important that the video is captured in high resolution, preferably 4K and above. I took a test image of the Moon with Full HD video and it wasn’t good. Also in iPhone 14Prowhich got a very reasonable image from 4K video.

I took advantage of it blue Moon and I tried to photograph our natural satellite, but, just like with Joelma, the Moon betrayed me. The photos weren’t as good as I expected. Maybe because I didn’t use a tripod to keep the phone more stable.

I took photos with iPhone 14Pro And how Xiaomi 13Proand cell phone images of Apple they were reasonable. Comfortable Xiaomi, I didn’t get a very nice photo, perhaps with more calm I could have created an interesting image. But I tried several times, held my breath and found nothing better than the image below.

The good thing is, with these tips, you won’t think you’ve taken a photo of a pole, at least most of the time. Even if it’s not exactly pretty, you can still identify what’s up there in the sky.

And it’s not a photo with an AI mask that improves it, as happens with Moon mode on some devices. In fact, I tried the photo from video method with Galaxy S22 Ultra and I couldn’t get enough brightness reduction so that the satellite wasn’t just a bright spot.
