Fragments | Globoplay will make chapters of incomplete classic soap operas available

Globoplay announced this Friday (1/12), during CCXP 2023, the Fragmentos project, which will make chapters of incomplete soap operas from the 70s and 80s available for streaming.

The announcement was made by the director of Digital Products and Pay Channels, Erick Brêtas, together with Globoplay’s programming manager, Flavio Furtado, and Globoplay’s programming coordinator Carolina Arca, as well as actresses Mariana Ximenes and Christiane Torloni.

The release of assorted episodes reflects the lack of preservation of Globo’s classic catalogue. Research conducted with the aim of streaming soap opera stories ended up revealing that many works are incomplete, with few chapters preserved. The idea of Fragmentos is to offer what exists so as not to deprive the public of being left without titles. There are, in total, 28 soap operas with a maximum of 20 episodes retained, which will be made available to subscribers.

“Many of you have asked me. We have 28 incomplete titles. In some cases we only have one chapter, seven, ten. It is not possible to have a complete story arc, but there is an important part of the soap opera story that can still be told with cultural value, collector value, curiosity value and that is part of our desire to see what a telenovela was like back then. So, we will recover, in stages, these 28 fragments of our culture, of Brazilian dramaturgy”, stated Erick Brêtas at CCXP.

In the first wave, the soap operas “O Rebu” (1974), “Estúpido Cupido” (1976), “Coração Alado” (1980) and “Chega Mais” (1980) will be shown. The platform’s forecast is to make all four available in January and, subsequently, one new title per month until the end of 2025.

Christiane Torloni, who was part of the cast of “Chega Mais”, expressed her opinion on the initiative, which will revive one of her first works. “This is a magnificent memory project. This process of moving from analog to digital is very beautiful, because it is also a way to safeguard the material not only for now, but also for the next generations. CCXP is an event that talks about ‘high tech’ and this one speaks to the technology of the time.”

In addition to Fragmentos, Globoplay will also make the complete version of “O Espigão” available in 2024. Launched in 1974, it is the oldest complete soap opera that Globo has kept in its archives. The launch will celebrate 50 years of work by Dias Gomes (1922-1999).
