This is a recurring criticism of The Crown. The Netflix series depicting the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II has been repeatedly criticized for deviating from the truth and challenging fictional narratives as historical facts. The first part of the 6th season, which was dedicated to Diana’s death, was no exception.

The series sometimes offered entirely fictitious scenes due to a lack of historical archives. This is especially true of the relationship between Diana and Dodi al-Fayed and the hours leading up to their deaths. They did not have time to publicly discuss their relationship. So the sources we relied on are not press articles from 1997, but Operation Paget (Commission of Inquiry into Diana’s alleged murder) and the medical examiner’s report published in 2006 and 2008, as these documents contain testimony from close friends of the tragedy. We remind you that the second part of the sixth and last season of The Crown will take place a few years after the Pont de l’Alma tragedy. These final episodes, in particular, will return to Charles’ marriage to Camilla Parker-Bowles, but also to the meeting of William and his future wife, Kate Middleton.
