“Crazy”: this hit on Netflix does not leave indifferent subscribers

He made the front page of scientific journals in 2011 when he performed the first ever artificial trachea transplant. The name Paolo Macarini may mean nothing to you, but the man was poised to become one of the greatest hopes of modern medicine. The reality, as told in the Netflix documentary, is very different.

In the film “Surgeon, Who Do You Want?”, journalist and director Ben Steele paints a portrait of this charismatic, seemingly brilliant Italian, considered by many to be a genius. He became famous for these risky operations, which allowed patients or accident victims to replace the trachea with a synthetic trachea prepared from the patients’ stem cells.

Between 2011 and 2014, eight people were operated on. Within weeks of the medical intervention, seven would lose their lives. Tragic disappearances of patients and practices surrounding certain gray areas lead to suspicion surrounding Dr. Macarini. In three episodes, the documentary series explores this revolting case.

Beyond the medical aspect of this story, the investigation lifts the curtain on the doctor’s personal life through the fascinating testimony of journalist Benita Alexander, who was tasked with reporting on Paolo Macarini before falling under his spell.
