John Lennon’s final words before his death were revealed for the first time in the recent documentary about the fateful night he was shot. In the documentary Lennon: murder without trialJay Hastings, the doorman at the Dakota building where the iconic Beatles member was murdered on December 8, 1980, has publicly shared details of the tragedy.

Hastings, who worked at the front desk of the building in Manhattan, reported hearing Lennon’s last words, which were: “They shot me”uttered as he ran and before falling to the ground.

“He ran by me and said, ‘I’ve been shot.’ Ambulance, call an ambulance, call an ambulance!’” Hastings recalled.




Taxi driver Richard Peterson, an eyewitness to the crime, added: “Lennon was getting in and a young man said: ‘John Lennon’. He was a big man. I was looking at him through the front window of my taxi. Suddenly he shot. This guy just shot John Lennon.”

Lennon was killed at the age of 40 on December 8, 1980, with four gunshots. At the time, he was leaving the Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono. The artist of the famous English band The Beatles was taken to hospital, but did not survive.

The new Apple TV+ series reports the details of the murder, in three episodes including audio of John Lennon’s killer, Mark Chapman, explaining the reasons for the crime. The premiere is scheduled for this Wednesday 6 December.
