Yellowstone: Why Kevin Costner’s father advised him to shoot in the series

Actors are right that they don’t always listen to their parents’ advice. This is especially true of Kevin Costner, the legendary American actor who is currently the hero of Yellowstone on Paramount+.

Back in the limelight thanks to the success of the western series, the 68-year-old star would never have appeared on the show if he had decided to follow his father’s advice.

In an interview given to the magazine in 2022 paradeKevin Costner reveals that before he joined the cast of Yellowstone, his father strongly advised him against the role, specifically calling the show “evil”:

You’re gonna lose your audience, boy. It’s a bad series. They are moving away from you. Mark my words: this is evil.

During the interview, Kevin Costner did not mention the reasons that prompted his father to make such comments. Taking this lead role in the series, against his father’s advice, the American actor once again became a leading star and ended several years of wandering in Hollywood.

But while the series allowed him to return to success (and notably win a Golden Globe for Best Actor), a feud between the star and showrunner Taylor Sheridan led to the program’s premature end. Thus, the story of Yellowstone will come to an end at the end of the second part of the 5th season, which is expected in the spring of 2024.

It doesn’t matter, because Kevin Costner is preparing to shoot a ten-hour Western mural called The Horizon (split into three parts). This project marks his major return to directing, twenty years after his last film Open Range and more than thirty years after his masterpiece Wolves (winner of seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director).

All five seasons of Yellowstone are now available exclusively on Paramount+.
