This year Caio Bonfim will be awarded as the best in Brazilian athletics

Representative of the race walk, Caio Bonfim, 32 years old, was elected the best of Brazilian athletics in the 2023 season. The athlete will thus receive the trophy from the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) during the Brazilian Olympic Prize award ceremony, on the 15th December, at the Cidade das Artes, in Rio de Janeiro.

Caio Bonfim had a truly special year: he won the bronze medal in the 20km race walk at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, breaking the Brazilian running record for the second time this year. At the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in November, he secured silver in the 20km and bronze in the marathon mixed relay together with Viviane Lyra.

To complete such a special season, the Brazilian was declared champion of the 20km of the World Athletics Race Walking Tour, a circuit of the main walking races in the world, equivalent to the Diamond League for athletics competitions.

“I am very happy. It has been a more than special year, with medals at the World Championships, the Pan American Championships, the World Tour title, two Brazilian records and now the choice for the Brazilian Olympic Prize”, commented the athlete born March 19, 1991, father of Miguel and Theo. “The World Tour title was fantastic. I had already achieved it in a few seasons and now I managed to win it for the first time.”

The title of best in athletics is always relevant, according to Caio, who obtained the award in 2017, when he won bronze at the World Championships in London. “Competing with beasts like Fabiana Murer, Thiago Braz, Darlan Romani and Alison Piu dos Santos is not easy,” he said. “It’s a great honor. The very high level our sport has reached. I go to the ceremony happy for life to represent our athletics.”
