Speaking after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping, the president of the European Union’s executive branch, Ursula von der Leyen, said that “the inequalities and differences between the EU and China must be resolved.”

“China is the EU’s most important trading partner, but there are clear imbalances and differences that need to be resolved,” he underlined.

“China must ensure fairer and more open access to its markets. There is no desire to decouple economies, but the current trade deficit is extremely unsustainable,” the European Commission commander said.

He also said that the question of position in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is crucial: “We have been very clear from the beginning: how China positions itself in relation to Russian aggression in Ukraine will be important in defining relations between Brussels and the Ukraine”. and Beijing.” .

European Council President Charles Michel, present at the meeting, said the EU was seeking a “stable and mutually beneficial” relationship with China.

Michel assured that “we are united in our commitment to seek a stable and mutually beneficial relationship with China”, adding that Brussels wants ties based on “principles of transparency, predictability and reciprocity”. .
