Beware, 100% cult movie! Released in 1980, La Boum is a classic of French cinema, a timeless work that, in addition to introducing Sophie Marceau to the general public, left its mark on an entire generation. And a movie that, as incredible as it may seem, really hasn’t aged!
La Boum is the story of Vic, a teenager who lives quietly between high school, her parents and Puppet, her grandmother. When her mother learns about the existence of her husband’s former mistress, she decides to “take a break”, but at the age of 13, Vicki only thinks about her first job…

Full of humor and sensitivity, La Boum is a film that perfectly conveys the anguish of adolescence and that still resonates today. It’s also a film that shows how parents can reset their offspring’s evolution and how time passes so quickly…
If La Boum is clearly a revelation film for Sophie Marceau, we shouldn’t leave out of the equation Claude Brasseur and Brigitte Fosse, perfect as Vicky’s parents. And the even less brilliant Dennis Grey, who plays the young heroine’s capricious grandmother.
With almost 4.4 million viewers, La Boum was the biggest success of 1980 at the French box office, ahead of… The Empire Strikes Back! A sequel would see the light of day two years later, still under the direction of Claude Pinot.
Note that the actress who plays young Penelope, Sheila O’Connor, almost became Vicky. Three weeks before the shooting, in fact, he was supposed to play the role of a young schoolboy. But the last-minute arrival of Sophie Marceau led to the casting.
And finally, how can we talk about La Boum without mentioning the song reality, which Nellie became a cult film after its release? Composed by Vladimir Kosma and performed by Richard Sanderson, the song was a number one seller in around fifteen countries in Europe and Asia, selling over 8 million copies of the title.
