Mercosur makes the common import tariff more flexible until 2025, the Ministry says

Mercosur has decided to suspend until December 2025 the rule limiting changes to the list of tariff exceptions adopted by the bloc’s countries for imported products, the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services said on Thursday.

The list of exceptions to the common external tariff (Letec) contains up to 100 items on which an import tax different from the tariff agreed between Mercosur members can be applied on purchases made from countries outside the bloc.

Until this week’s decision, to exchange the products in this list it was necessary to respect a six-monthly limit of 20% of the items. Countries will now be able to change 100% of the list by the end of 2025. The measure fulfills a proposal made by Brazil, according to the ministry.

“The additional flexibility in the management of Letec at this time is of great importance, considering the context of reduction of exceptional measures related to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said the executive secretary of the MDIC, Márcio Elias Rosa, in a note released by the ministry.

The measure was approved by the Mercosur Common Market Council, during the bloc’s summit which took place in Rio de Janeiro.
