You read that right, American director Steven Spielberg almost made a movie about a trio of drag queens played by Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo! A topic that is surprising to say the least for a filmmaker: How did he get involved in the extravaganza?
The project is actually partly his initiative, as the director of Jurassic Park decided to finance it through his firm Amblin. We can see some opportunism on ET’s father’s part, as Extravagances comes just a year after the success of Australian film Priscilla, Madwoman of the Desert, which has a similar pitch. In fact, two projects were turning points at the same time.
Considered cinema’s greatest storyteller, Spielberg found the script too funny, and to test whether the gags would work on people other than himself, he sent it to his comedic reference: Robin Williams. The latter was very amused to read it and therefore asked for a small appearance in the film.

under the direction of the project, Spielberg which will hire director Biban Kidron, who recently made The Flight of Gabrielle for the BBC with Vanessa Redgrave. But Kidron, for fear of being chosen, hid the fact that she had just become pregnant. When he exposes the team, the film’s insurers panic, and the project comes close to potential cancellation (or Kidron’s forced departure).

It was then that Steven Spielberg made a commitment: he would end the extravaganzas if the director’s pregnancy threatened the shooting! Between Schindler’s List and The Lost World, the director could have cast Patrick Swayze or Wesley Snipes!
“I kept saying to myself, ‘Why didn’t someone push me up the ladder from producing to eventually getting Steven Spielberg to direct the film?’Biban Kidron joked in 2015. “in reality”– he added more seriously, “The shoot took a little longer than expected and on the last day I was nine months and five days pregnant and we had to get on a plane to shoot in New York. When I landed, my water broke at JFK.”
So it was decided in one day!
