The Ukrainian parliament approves laws considered crucial for negotiations with the EU

Ukraine’s parliament on Friday approved four bills needed to start negotiations on joining the European Union (EU), including one on the rights of national minorities, a critical demand from Hungary, which opposes Ukraine’s candidacy. ‘Ukraine inside the bloc.

The parliament’s website confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had signed all the bills into law. He described them as a key step towards Ukraine’s candidacy for the 27-member bloc.

EU leaders must approve the measure unanimously. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán says he is against starting talks, as recommended by the European Commission.

“We hope that Ukraine’s efforts will be duly appreciated by the leaders of the European Union and that the corresponding European promises to Ukraine will be fulfilled,” Zelenskiy said in his evening video speech.

Budapest has clashed with Kiev over what it calls restrictions on the rights of Hungarians in western Ukraine, especially in relation to education.
