The Red Sea International Film Festival closed this Thursday, December 7, with a screening of Michael Mann’s new film Ferrari, after a star-studded and emotional awards ceremony, partially funded by Saudi Arabia. After Diane Kruger, Ranveer Singh and Abdullah Al-Sadan last week, it’s Nicolas Cage’s turn to receive the lifetime achievement honor, who, among others, came to present the screenplay for Christopher Borgli’s new film, Dream. And among the celebrities who were in Jeddah last night were Gwyneth Paltrow, Andrew Garfield, Halle Berry, Adrien Broad and Henry Goulding.
The first feature film
This year’s jury, chaired by Baz Luhrmann, also crowned In Flames in the competition dedicated to Arabic, Asian and African cinema. Already causing a sensation at Cannes, Pakistani director Zarar Kahn’s first feature film follows the precarious existence of a mother and her family, which is disrupted after the death of the family patriarch. Then they have to choose whether to face the past or be haunted by their fears. The film is due to be released in French cinemas in 2024, where it will be distributed by The Jokers.
Mouna Hawa won the title of the best actress
Among other honors, Karim Bensalah’s Six Feet on Earth took home the prize for Best Screenplay, while Muna Hawa was named Best Actress for Amjad Al Rashid’s Inshallah un fils. Augure by Baloji, in cinemas from November 29, won the prize for best cinematic contribution, while Les Filles d’Olfa, by Tunisian director Kauter Ben Hania and released last summer, was crowned best documentary.
