With the confirmation of Vasco da Gama’s participation in the next edition of the Série A of the Brazilian championship and the recent dismissal of Paulo Bracks, the Rio club is promptly committed to filling the vacant position of sporting director. Cruz-Maltino is close to announcing the signing of Alexandre Mattos. The sporting director is in the process of looking for a residence in Rio de Janeiro.

Alexandre Mattos stands out as one of the most important sports coaches in the Brazilian football scene. Starting his career at América-MG, he achieved the status of two-time Brazilian champion by holding the role of sporting director at Cruzeiro, in 2013 and 2014.

The following year, Mattos took charge of Palmeiras, becoming known, among other successes, for the significant number of signings, totaling 25 reinforcements in his first year. After winning two Brazilian titles (in 2016 and 2018), his career at Verdão ended with his sacking in November 2019.

Luiz Adriano, Mayke, Gustavo Gómez, Gustavo Scarpa, Marcos Rocha, Weverton, Deyverson, Felipe Melo, Luan and Dudu were some of the signings of Alexandre Mattos, very important players in the campaigns of Libertadores, Brasileirãos, Copa do Brasil and many other titles . Mattos’ hiring ability has had a significant impact on the performance and competitiveness of the teams he manages.

After a decent spell at Atlético-MG and a brief foray into North American football, he returned to Brazil in 2022 to take on the role of CEO of Football Business and domestic and international areas at Atletico-PR.

For Atletico-PR, Mattos made excellent transfers and signings, strengthening the squad with the purchase of left back Lucas Esquivel, defender Cacá, midfielder Vidal and midfielder Bruno Zapelli. Esquivel and Vidal have already secured their starting places, demonstrating rapid adaptation, while Cacá and Zapelli still promise to make a significant contribution to the team. Zapelli is one of the greatest promises of Italian and Argentine football and the second greatest signing in the team’s history.

For Vasco it is extremely important to have a sporting director who is constantly looking for the best options on the market, has a keen vision and a vast network of attentive observers. A negative example of this scenario was the past management of Cruz-Maltino director Paulo Bracks, who refused to sign Paulinho, the Brazilian league’s top scorer, citing a high price. This decision, however, ended up resulting in the composition of the team with players who did not have a significant impact and, at the same time, represented a greater cost for the club.
