Santos’ season was disastrous. Peixe was eliminated prematurely from all the competitions they played in and ended up relegated to Serie B of the Brazilian championship for the first time in their history. The poor performances also led to the highest defeat percentage since 1996. The team lost 39% of the 62 games played.
The high number of lost matches has tormented Alvinegro Praiano since the Campeonato Paulista, the first competition of the season. Santos was eliminated in the group stage, in which they lost four of 12 matches played. The percentage of defeats, therefore, was 33%.
Even in the Copa Sudamericana dispute the team ended with a negative balance. Eliminated in the group stage, Santos lost half of the six matches played, achieving just one victory.

The Copa do Brasil was the only competition in which Peixe won more than he lost. The team competed in the tournament from the first stage onwards and reached the round of 16. Despite failing to advance, Alvinegro Praiano were not defeated in regulation time.
In the Brazilian championship the percentage of defeats has taken off. After finishing a few laps in the top half of the table, Santos fell and couldn’t even get close to the top places, in fact, they fought against relegation all year. He eventually fell after missing 17 games, about 45% of his total.
In 1996, the last time the club had a similar defeat percentage, final results in competitions were better. Even though they lost 39% of their matches, Peixe reached the semi-final of the Libertadores and won more than they were beaten. In 2023, however, it was 19 wins and 24 losses.
Next season Santos will only have two matches on the calendar. At the beginning of the year he will compete in the Campeonato Paulista. Subsequently they will only play Serie B, as they have not qualified for the Copa do Brasil nor for any continental competition.
