“The World After Us” premiered on Netflix last Friday (8) and gave people something to talk about. In first place in the ranking of the most viewed works on the platform, the film directed by Sam Esmail and starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali does not have a clear ending, leaving viewers divided on the experience.
In an interview with OmeletteEsmail explained why he ended the film this way and what he intended to cause.
What is “The World After Us” about?
What the director has to say
To the Omelette, the director responded that “we don’t always get the answers to our questions.” However, Sam Esmail knew while he was writing the ending of “The World After Us” that not everyone would like him.
I know many people seek out forms of entertainment as a kind of escapism and want satisfying endings, answers and resolutions. But, for me, this would betray the central point of the story, which is, precisely, reflect about all the chaos that happens in our lives and the fact that we don’t always get the answers to our questions.

He further explained that he did not want the film’s ending to be an endpoint, but rather an ellipsis. The reason for this would be to let the audience draw their own conclusions. Esmail also claims that a work with “preemptive” content must leave a conclusion “in the mind of the audience”.
What happens at the end of “The World After Us”
At the end of the film, in the midst of the apocalypse in New York, the protagonist couple believes that their two children have disappeared.
However, Rose appears in an abandoned house, where she discovers a bunker with supplies, electricity, and a DVD collection. “The World After Us” ends with the viewing of the last episode of the “Friends” series.
