Remember the name of this series: Echo. If you watched the Hawkeye mini-series in 2021, then you know this character has the right to be on his own on Disney+.
This new Marvel series explores the origins of Maya Lopez’s character, whose behavior in New York even matches her hometown. Pursued by Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire, she must confront her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and regain her sense of family and community…
Along with Echo, Marvel is launching SPOTLIGHT, an entirely new brand for its Disney+ platform, with darker and more violent productions. And the first thoughts on the series, which recently dropped on the social network X, seem to confirm this. English journalists actually got a chance to see the first three episodes (of the expected 6) and they seem to have generally appreciated it:
#Echo It’s definitely the beginning of a new tone announced at Marvel Studios. Earthy, violent and reminiscent – in a sense – of the Marvel/Netflix period. If the story sometimes gets lost in too many subplots, the Marvel Street aspect is really quite good. pic.twitter.com/sfpYWdweah

I enjoyed the first two episodes #Echo Which had an incredible (and violent) fight scene that I want to watch over and over again. The sound design is đŸ”¥
The brilliant Alaqua Cox keeps me drawn in, but I find the narrative and pacing shaky.
I’d love to see the rest! pic.twitter.com/tTuSo3L04s

If you have MCU end-of-the-world stakes for something more grounded #Echo is a tonic. Watched two episodes and it’s a tough action thriller with a great sense of Native American culture. Can’t wait to see the final three when they go down in January. pic.twitter.com/1dS9wjHTNj

“I’ve seen two episodes and it’s a hard-hitting action thriller that highlights Native American culture. I can’t wait to see the final three when they come out in January.”
I saw the first two episodes #Echo tonight and you have a lot to think about. I think fans of Netflix’s Daredevil will love it. It’s like Marvel remembered that it can be violent and dark. Alaqua Cox is amazing! I don’t like all creative decisions though pic.twitter.com/qvujfoAKiT

#Echo – I have to watch the first 3 episodes. More mature than others #disneyplus #wonder shows, a great fight scene with Daredevil. Loved Kingpin. Fab Action. More like “television”. Low stakes, perfect for a new Spotlight brand. Looking forward to more episodes on January 10th. pic.twitter.com/Vne3lkxPYk

“I was able to watch the first 3 episodes. More mature than the other series #disneyplus #marvel, great fight scene with Daredevil. Loved the Kingpin. Fabulous action. It’s more like ‘TV’. Low stakes but perfect for it. New Spotlight brand . I can’t wait to watch the rest of the episodes on January 10.”
It’s really impossible not to think of Daredevil when you see some of these comments. The Netflix Marvel series was praised for the quality of the choreography and dark tone. Something we’d hoped we’d never see on Disney+, as it’s a pretty family-friendly platform.
Marvel: Stop or still? What does the future hold for MCU superheroes?
But these first thoughts on Echo and the presence of the Hell Devil in the kitchen, once again played by Charlie Cox, suggest that Marvel has reversed that decision and that it won’t hesitate to be more violent. We’ll have to wait until January 10th and when all the episodes are posted online to form a final opinion.
