“I receive criticism calmly,” says Alexandre de Morais of the accusations of abuse of power

In an interview, the minister said that Bolsonarism did not lead him to the left and said that he is guided by the Constitution

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and current president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes, declared that Bolsonarism does not lead him to the left. “I remain where I have always been, respecting the Constitution,” he said in an interview with Folha de S.Paulo.

Moraes also spoke about complaints and accusations of abuse of power coming from defendants, lawyers and even parliamentarians in relation to the January 8th acts. He stressed that such demonstrations are part of the democratic scenario, even if some of them seem contradictory.

“I accept criticism with total ease. […]. Even though there were no people related to these people, they had, I would say, fascist slogans in relation to those who committed crimes. They have never defended what they have now before the Supreme Court, due process of law, the right to a lawyer, to a trial before 11 ministers,” she said.

As rapporteur on the January 8 prosecutions, the minister also defended his work, stressing that he had received the support of the Supreme Court in the plenary session. “This is the greatest reason for satisfaction, because it shows that my conduct was within the constitutional parameters,” he said.

“Just because you are middle class doesn’t mean you won’t be prosecuted, convicted or arrested. These people who criticize the prison system today never cared about Brazil’s 700,000 prisoners,” he added.

In another part of the interview, Moraes spoke about the praise he received from sectors of the left, even if they were opponents in the past, as happened during a ceremony at the Palácio do Planalto on Monday the 11th.

It also supported the STF’s decision on the responsibility of the press for the statements of interviewees, while recognizing the need for an adaptation of the text.

“The decision applies to all types of media. Mainly to the Electoral Tribunal, where we have already defined, from 2021, that the use of social networks, large technologies, is equivalent to the media for the purposes of the Electoral Tribunal. It does not I see nothing different in the general repercussions approved compared to what already exists,” he said.
